The Google Caffeine Effect – I think Google is officially whacked!

By Steven · Saturday, August 22nd, 2009

huh

Google is doing something weird… not sure if it is an early implementation of some of the Google Caffeine stuff, but…

…earlier today I was cleaning up a ton of keywords that I had done research for last month before sending them off to a couple of my writers. While going through my research I noticed some interesting discrepancies in the Google results. Let me explain.

For instance, in July, the phrase:

‘how to tone your stomach’ – had a traffic volume of 3600 searches (phrase match); All In Title search result of 171; and a phrase match result of 6230.

Today, the results were somewhat different, with a traffic volume of 2900 (which is fine); all in title results of 105,000 (yikes); and a phrase match result of 2,050,000 (double yikes).

What the heck?

I was thinking maybe I did something wrong. So, I went on to another keyword phrase:

‘how to loose stomach fat’ – In July this keyword had a traffic volume of 3600 (again in phrase match); all in title results of 325; and a phrase match search result of 6630.

Today I found this: traffic volume of 2900 (everything is fine); all in title of 328 (still good); phrase match result of 1,630,000 (huh?).

And this wasn’t an isolated instance, it happened to quite a few keywords…

By the way if you don’t know what all this means, don’t worry, just have a look at my keyword research videos here:

So now I’m wondering if it’s just something wrong in my end of the world or if everybody is starting to see similar results? If so, I think the way we do keyword research will have to change… and start looking at other factors besides phrase match volume and all in title results.

Yes I am seeing crazy results that. I use Micro Niche Finder and one night I was double checking the stats that I had gotten from the tool.

Well on some of my keywords, phrase match would be like “3600″ but all title match returned more than “50000″ results. Yes I know that sounds crazy but this is what I experienced.

I’ve also had similar results to what you are talking about.

I’ve been getting this too and have no idea why. And it’s been going on for weeks.

is it effect all the site or some sites only?

Google is still doing its crazy ‘phrase match number’ dance – have you any more info since this August post? I can test the true figures myself by paging through at the bottom …. when you get to the end, Google will add, there are more but very similar to the previous shown pages, then give you a more reasonable indicator of the figures. Howver, this is not good for niche research is it!
