I was just watching / listening to an interview with Seth Godin on the “Mindset of a winner”. Seth Godin is one of my “heroes” when it comes to marketing so I’m always interested in hearing what he’s got to say. In this particular interview, he talked about mediocrity and how you ought to differentiate yourself from the average. I think what he’s got to say also applies to affiliate internet marketing as well.

Here are some things I found interesting:

- No one picks mediocrity – if you were going to the store, would you pick the mediocre one?

- Get “talked about” – you can’t win by being cheaper. By getting talked about you will get people who are “pre-sold” on you, which allows you to communicate with emotion and trust. This by a concept he talked about in his book “the Purple Cow”.

- Give up 90% of what you’re doing and get really great at just a few things!

If you want to watch the interview, watch it here:

Do you think it requires an innate ability to be considered an ‘expert’ at something?

Have you ever wondered why some people excel to what we consider “amazing” heights in something, while you keep struggling?

Believe it or not, while having an in-born talent at something don’t hurt, most experts taught themselves how to become one.

Recently I watched a short video presentation by a journalist named Joshua Foer that I found pretty interesting. In it he relates his experience with mnemonics (how to create superior memory) and how he taught himself this skill to win a memory competition.

During the presentation he discussed 4 specific things that separates the average within a field or skill set from an expert. These four commonalities he found were quite interesting, so I’ve decided to list them here (in my own words):

1. Experts “fail forward”. They constantly operate outside of their comfort zone and stretch their boundaries. In other words, instead of practicing something familiar within a specific skill set (like playing the piano) they practice the most difficult portions of that particular piece.

2. Emulate someone more successful than you. This brought to mind something I’ve heard Tony Robbins say a number of times: “If you want to be successful, find someone who has achieved the results you want and copy what they do and you’ll achieve the same results”.

3. Evaluate past successes AND failures. A quote by Ken Blanchard comes to mind here: “Feedback is the breakfast of champions.”

4. Continually gather data. Keeping track of your progress is key. As Joshua Foer said in his presentation: “Geeking out is useful”).

If you want to check out the video presentation, here it is:

About a year ago I was introduced to a pretty simple technique regarding time management involving a tomato that changed my business in a big way.

(It has literally been responsible for thousands of dollars in my business and I thought it may help you as well).

The technique is called the “Pomodoro Technique” (pomodoro = tomato in Italian) and was created by a guy named Francesco Cirillo back in 1992. It involves a simple
kitchen timer (shaped like a tomato – hence the name), a pen and a sheet of paper.

In a nutshell, this technique looks like this:

You create a to-do list, or rather a ‘task list’ on a sheet of paper.

You pick the first task on the list and set your timer to 25 minutes (one 25-minute block of time is called a pomodoro) and work until the time is up (you stop what you’re doing NO MATTER WHAT).

Once your task is completed you cross it off your list.

For every 25 minute segment you take a five minute break, and after every 4 pomodoros you take a longer break of 20 – 30 minutes or so.

Simple, right?

Now, there’s a little bit more to it than this and you can download the entire ebook completely free from the pomodoro technique website (there’s no catch and no opt-in required):

http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/resources/ThePomodoroTechnique_v1-3.pdf

They also have a little cheat sheet and worksheet PDFs you can download free of charge on this page as well:

http://www.pomodorotechnique.com/products.html
(just scroll down towards the bottom of the page)

If you’re short on time or suffer from Internet Marketing ADD (like I do), then this technique can literally change your business around (I honestly wish I had come across this info sooner in my IM career).

Have a look, read the book and implement it into your business and let me know how it works for you!

All the best,

PS – As for the whole timer thing… I don’t actually use an egg timer. I downloaded an iPhone app called the “Pomodoro Timer” for $0.99. It sounds and sort of looks like an egg timer…

PPS – I highly recommend that you use a timer that ‘ticks’ (counts down the time). For some reason it has a psychological effect that really helps get your butt in gear… (at least for me).
