In last weeks installment of Trend Research Tools, we discussed a couple of Google’s tools (Trends and Insights) as well as Ice Rocket’s Trend tool.

This week we’ll take a look at four additional trend research tools you can use to uncover hot topics as they’re happening (I’ll list them in alphabetical order):

Alltop.com

Alltop is a ‘search engine’ of sorts that collects the latest headlines and stories around the web. In a sense, it’s almost like browsing a magazine rack at the bookstore… with all of the latest news and stories on many different topics.

Because they are aggregating tons of feeds on a multitude of topics, it allows you to quickly scan news and events in your chosen niche quickly to help you come up with ideas for content on your own blogs.

Amazon Movers & Shakers

This week we’ll take a look at just one of the many useful resources provided to us by Amazon.com: The Movers and Shakers list.

If you’re a “Micro Niche Blogger” then this page is a fantastic opportunity to see what is currently popular in physical products (and if you’ve seen my free video tutorials on blogging, then you already know how much I value Amazon and physical product related niches).

The Movers and Shakers list is not a list of the most popular products on Amazon, rather it’s a list of the products which have gained the most (in terms of ranking) in the last 24 hours. This can be quite useful for the trend blogger as you can see what has gained A LOT over the last day, then go investigate the reason why (and report it on your blog and hopefully piggyback on the rise in popularity of said product).

Wall Street Journal’s Most Popular List

If you own a financial / business related blog, this list can come in handy. This list will give you:

The most viewed news articles (overall and by category). It also allows you to see what’s most popular today, this week and in the last month.

The most emailed – as it suggests, you can take a look at the most emailed piece of news today, this week and this month.

There is also a section on the most popular Wall Street Journal blog posts for the same time range (as above).

Yahoo Buzz

This one is an oldie… but it’s still a useful tool to see what’s trending “right now”.

Currently you can submit your own stories and also vote (or buzz) stories up in ranking. However, Yahoo has recently reported that they will get discontinue the voting aspects of this list in the near future.

One of the nice things about Yahoo Buzz is that not only will they bring you the most popular news items but also give you the buzz on blog posts, viral videos and local news items.

So, there you have it! Four additional resources to get the latest news and information for your own blogs.

Next week I’ll share with you a few more resources that I use to catch the latest trends and what’s currently popular in the market place.

Have fun!

I’m constantly on the lookout for new resources and tools that can simplify my tasks (or at least make it a bit easier and/or faster).

Now, you probably already know that one of the ways you can capitalize with affiliate marketing is by looking out for the latest trends in your niche OR to spy out new trends that you can create blogs or campaigns (PPC or otherwise) around.

So, in this series on Trend Research Tools for blogging and affiliate marketers, I’ll cover many of the known and less known research tools available to us… so, if you’ve ever wondered how to find trends to write about be sure to pay attention to some of my future posts about this topic.

One of the common tools out there is Google Trends (formerly called Google Zeitgeist).

While Google Trends is a great tool to discover what is trending RIGHT NOW (as far as search goes), it’s not as useful as it once was, because it now only lists the “Top 20″ sites (while in the past it used to display the top 100 trends at any given time). However, it is still one of my favorite tools for discovering trends, and it should be a part of anyone’s trend finding repertoire.

Another useful resource by Google is the Google Insights for Search.

If you’re not familiar with Google Insights, I recommend you check out the videos by Google here.
With this tool you can compare search volume for a specific keyword phrase (over time – it goes back 3 years in time) as well as other relevant popular keywords. I personally use the “web search” and the “product search” filters the most, but Insights offers a plethora of search filters, so play around with it…

A similar tool to the Google Insights tool is Ice Rocket’s Trend Tool:

This tool allows you to search for what is popular out there (and talked about) by bloggers and is a great resource for seeing the “supply and demand” for a given keyword phrase. One nifty feature of this tool is that you can compare up to 3 keyword sets at a time (which can be very useful). The Ice Rocket Trend tool will only allow you to go back 3 months in time (as opposed to Google Insights, which shows you the trends 3 years into the past).

In the next installment we’ll cover three more resources for discover trends.

All the best,

I recently released a series of videos about setting up profit pulling websites for fun and profit at SuperSimpleBlogging.com. It’s a work in progress but contains very detailed information about how anyone can setup profitable websites.

And specifically because of the content in these videos I’ve started to get hate mail.

So far I’ve gotten a couple of emails from people telling me to stop putting this kind of information up… for free. And curiously both were from relatively well-known marketers that frequents a rather
large IM forum…

Why?

Because, as one of them put it:

“It’s not right, people make a living off of selling this kind of information”.

I guess I must be doing something right. :)

So in protest, I’m going to ask my readers for a favor…

1. Check out the videos I’ve put up so far;
2. If you like what you see simply help me get the word out about it!
3. Tweet it, share it on Facebook, in your favorite marketing forum or
what not.

And if you don’t think the information is good enough to share with others, please shoot me a comment below and let me know what I can do to actually make the content better!

Thanks,

I’ve written about this in the past and even posted the it on my blog before, but thought I’d share it again.

One of my favorite speeches of all time… Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address.

Those who know me probably can understand why…

My favorite quote from the speech: “Death is the single best invention of life”. (you have to listen to the speech to “get it”).

Another really powerful speech (ok, so it’s not technically a speech since it’s actually a lecture) is Randy Pausch’s “Last Lecture”. I found it to be very powerful and moving. If you haven’t seen it, you ought to…

Have a great one!
