Case Study Using Scribd.com - Appear on the First Page of Google Part 2
UPDATE: Unfortunately, due to spamming, Scribd.com is no longer suitable for marketing as they no longer allow hyperlinks out of the saved documents…
Yesterday I wrote about Hubpages and how I managed to appear on the first page of google within a couple of days. Due to the nature of hubs, my hubpage got knocked off the first page (mostly due to me changing the content of the hub as an experiment).
In any event, I have an inquisitive nature and have been setting up different types of Web 2.0 properties to see how they affect the rankings in Google for certain keywords.
Over the past few weeks I’ve been messing around with a Web 2.0 document sharing site called Scribd. Scribd is essentially a way for you to write and/or upload documents online to share with the world. They accept all of the major file formats: MS Word, MS Excel, PDF etc. and is quite a handy tool for keeping documents online.
I’ve noticed some pretty good results with Scribd, so I decided to target the same keyword phrase as last time (project quick cash reviews) and upload pretty much the same content to Scribd to see what happens.
Here are the steps I took:
1. Created a new account for my campaign using my primary keyword phase
2. Upload the content - I actually copied and pasted the from a notepad file
3. Created Hyperlinks with appropriate anchor text to another review of the product.
4. Added appropriate tags
5. Published my content (make it available to the public)
6. Ping my Project Quick Cash Review on Scribd over at Pingomatic.com
So, what happened?
Well, within 4 hours of uploading the content I was at the top of page 2 in Google. And after 13 hours it’s still in the same spot (I haven’t added any additional backlinks):

I ‘m also on page 2 for the keyword phrases: project quick cash review and the phrase review of project quick cash.
Since I’ve used virtually identical content to a couple of other web 2.0 properties, it will be interesting to see if the ranking will hold after 3 - 5 days. I have also added a few backlinks to this page (as of about 15 mintues prior to me writing this) to see how it will affect ranking as well.
Again, there are a TON of web 2.0 properties that you can leverage off of and create "mini-nets" around to funnel traffic to your website.
EDIT: It’s been 19 hours since I launched the Scribd.com page, and it’s now in the top 10 (first page) for the keyword "Project Quick Cash Reviews"…

Hi Steven. It is the first time I come ot your blog thanks to a friend’s recommendation. I have been experimenting with scribd.com too for a while, and it is great.
However an extra step you didn’t mention when publishing on scribd would be to convert your document from pdf to html once it is finished uploading. Why? Because in pdf you annot click on the link, but in HTML you can. And this gives us the link to what we are promoting.
Great blog, I’ve already subscribed to it.

Thanks Paolo for checking out my website.
And thanks for adding this important tip, which was an oversight of mine while writing this case study.
All the best,

When I view your word document on Scribd - I can not click on the hyperlinks. there has got to be a way to load a word document up to scribd and have the links work. I have seen other documents that do, yet your word documents and some that I have posted do not. How do we get hyperlinks to work? Do we upload in a different format?

Alas, scribd has had its day as far as internet marketing goes. They’ve now removed the option of having your page in html and the pdf document is stripped of hyperlinks.
According to them its due to abuse by internet marketers and SEOers.
Shame, as it worked really well.
